G’s Porsche 944 Turbo

1986 Porsche 944 Turbo-black leather interior, full electric package, Fuchs alloy wheels.

Be gentle, the memory still hurts

In 1986 Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo.  At that time, its near perfect 49/51 weight distribution garnered it the title ‘Best Handling Car in the World’ and it still stands today as an excellent measure of performance by which to compare others.  Unfortunately, I discovered the hard way that rear wheel drive cars without ABS and traction control can be a little unwieldy in wet weather…this car met its demise in the middle of a 7 car pileup on Hwy 26 as I tried to avoid a Ford Escort who moved into my lane without warning.  With only 51,034 miles on the odometer, this was truly a collector’s car; after putting the remains up for sale on the Internet, I took calls from as far away as Florida and North Carolina from body shops interested in putting it back together.  I finally sold it to an individual collector/rebuilder in Montanta, who wanted it to complement his normally-aspirated black on black 944.  I still kick myself every now and again, to remind myself how stupid I was to be driving a car like this in the rain.

Here are some of the upgrades and specs:

  • 0-60, 5.9 seconds
  • ¼ mile: 13.2 seconds, 112.4 MPH
  • Garret exhaust
  • Polished aluminum 16 inch Fuchs wheels ($800/ea.  I know this because one was damaged in the accident)
  • Tinted windows
  • Alpine/Kenwood CD sound system
  • Greddy Turbotimer
